What you need to consider when writing a book review

Any review is an evaluation of a work, and in most cases it gives an answer to the question whether the author liked the book or did not like it. To make feedback as interesting and meaningful as possible, it’s enough to follow a few simple rules.

The review must necessarily talk about the contents of the book – and speak more than the abstract. But this does not mean that you should give a brief account of everything that happens on its pages. It’s unlikely that people who have not read the work will thank you for putting all the cards on the table.

Why did I like the book? Why do I get annoyed by heroes? Why did I want to read other works of the author? Why will I never advise this book to some people? Why could not I finish reading it? Why did I burst into tears or laugh until I fell down during the reading? Answering such questions, on the way out you will almost get a ready review.

What are the reviews?

Informative – these are the reviews that help the future reader determine the choice of the book. Sometimes they compare several works.

Publicistic – designed to indicate to the reader the general problem that the book illuminates.

Critical – this is a real autopsy for the book and its author. It is important to know the topic even better than the writer, and otherwise the failure is guaranteed. Dazzle with argumentative evidence of the reviewer’s point of view.

Essays – took the book and on its basis developed their deep theme. The main thing that would be thought, the artistic quality of the text is the main feature.

Private – in these reviews there is no analysis, only impressions of the book in a simple spoken language.

Proplachennye – the lowest type of reviews, which differ in a one-sided view of the work in a minus or plus. Supported by many weak evidence. What are reviewsOfficial and functional – the prerogative of official sources, restrained reviews with an abundance of factual information (publisher, year, etc.). The main goal is to introduce the reader to the new work in brief and to attract the audience.

The choice of form is yours, each is good and suited to its type of audience. The most important law for all reviewers is to read books about which you write, not to browse, but to read thoughtfully.

The main idea of the book review

Today, a huge number of critics and those who want to express their views, and others to listen to him. A review of a book, a sample of which can be found in any textbook, is actually not as simple as it might seem. Therefore, not every writer, reader or journalist has sufficient analytical mind and critical eye to optimally and correctly write unbiased reviews.

About how to write a correct review of the book can not be read or learned, because many critics just received a good philological education, which allows you to determine the grade and quality of the work. A bad review is primarily distinguished by the dominance of one’s own opinion, the definitions are bad and a good book, little argumentation and lack of critical view, accurate conclusions. At the same time, the text is more like a school essay or a review of a book told to a friend.

A low-quality review will not be a worthy response to the book, and therefore critics should be aware of the full responsibility for their feedback. Before you write a review of the book, it is worth considering all the criteria of a quality work, but only the last point to indicate your attitude and perception of the book.

Experienced critics can say a lot about the work from the first pages of the book, but the inexperienced will have to read the text completely. However, ideally the critic is obliged to read the text carefully and fully, so that the conclusions are as reasoned and accurate as possible. A review of a good book, a sample of which can be found in classical works, where the best minds of modern times wrote their reviews, and later editors to add them to the contents of the book.

A review is a review, which means responsibility for the spoken word. Thus, the review should take into account the maximum of criteria, and the most important is the plot, its quality, the number of characters and the role of disclosure of characters, the relevance of the subject, the uniqueness of the canvas of the work. The other criteria depend more on the genre of the work, because it is not worthwhile to review the love story with the criteria of characters or the complexity of the plot. Particular prejudice and a large number of reviews are caused by works of famous contemporaries, who position themselves as confident authors of quality books. As a rule, there are always two camps: opponents or admirers of similar books or authors. A striking example is Paulo Coelho or Janusz Wisniewski, as well as many contemporary authors who continue to write under the flurry of real-time criticism.

Writing an essay-comparative

Write an essay-comparative not in order. I’m not kidding. Perhaps you were taught to write down the paper from beginning to end, but this isn’t only more difficult, but also, besides, your ideas will turn out to be incoherent. Instead, do this:

First, write the body. Work through all the info that you have, and see what story it tells you. When you process your data, you’ll find out which item of your work will be the most voluminous.

The next stage is the conclusion. After you have coped with the most difficult task, the basic idea of your work is clearly presented to you.

In the end is the introduction. It’s a rephrasing of your summary. Be careful and don’t use the same words and phrases.

The first sentence of the body’s paragraphs (it is named the key sentence) tells the recipient what will be told. The middle part of the paragraph reveals the info you have collected, and the last sentence makes a small summary based on this info. Be attentive and don’t break the boundaries of paragraphs, creating one big point, revealing two topics – this is the task of the final part.

Once you have decided on the points by which you will make a comparison, decide which composition of the paragraph will be used (how the comparisons will be arranged) in order to give the data the greatest significance. It’s recommended that you first sketch out the plan (as a placeholder) to successfully organize the transitions.

Be careful not to relate the different aspects of every subject. Comparison of the color of one object with the size of another doesn’t give the reader the opportunity to compare them.

Write a conclusion. When the work is ready, the reader should get the impression that he has learned something new, and also he must feel that the work is completed. It should cover the brief, basic info that you used in the body, and then draw a more ambitious conclusion about the two subjects. The last sentence should leave the recipient with the feeling that all ideas expressed in the work are closely related and represent a single whole

The introduction in an essay

The composition of an essay, like any written work, includes three main blocks: entry, main body and conclusion. The absence of one of these components is a serious mistake. At the same time, the most difficult task is to write a good, qualitative introduction, because it determines the main mental canvas, sets the style of presentation of the material, etc. Therefore, on how well the first paragraph was written, the final impression of the work and, of course, the evaluation received for it largely depends.

The introduction is like an introductory part. It is here that the content of the topic stated in the title of the essay is disclosed, general information is given on the issue under discussion. How can I start an essay on the subject of literature? Sometimes, in the introduction, the main question of the topic is immediately given a short, exhaustive answer, which is later described in more detail. In other words, in this part of the essay it is necessary to formulate a few simple but very capacious proposals that would contain the main semantic load of the entire text.

To succeed, it is not necessary to reinvent the wheel. You can go the beaten paths, which have often helped your predecessors. After all, classical techniques have long been established, with the help of which it is possible to start the school essay with great success. These include:

* an excursion into the history;

* comparison;

* analytical beginning.

Historical excursus

In this case, the introduction is based on a brief description of the historical era, which is described in the work. This is particularly appropriate in the case if the novel a, respectively, and the composition, raise social or political issues relevant to the time in question.

Comparison

You can also touch not only the content of the literary work, but also tell about the historical period in which it was created, the political situation in the country where the writer lived and worked. Starting from this, they proceed smoothly to the extent to which the appearance of the novel or story in question was relevant at that time, and how important it is to study this work for understanding contemporary social conflicts.

Analytical start

 Here you need not only to know deeply the material on which the composition is written, but also be able to think figuratively, build a convincing logical chain and have a good command of the word.
